A NOTE FROM BISHOP HERMAN YOOS:

Dear friends,

I hope by now you have taken the time to read the Draft Social Statement on Human Sexuality. To help us as a synod provide feedback on this draft statement, you are invited to attend a forum held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 525 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC, on Thursday, September 25, from 1:30 – 4:00 pm.  At this forum we will listen to one another and listen for the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit in addressing as ELCA Lutherans, how we understand God’s gift of human sexuality.

I am thankful that we are part of a church that is willing to invite deliberation and discernment upon issues that affect all of human life. Moral deliberation in our cultural context today is seldom easy or simple, but it is still vitally important for us to be engaged in.  A churchwide representative from the ELCA Task Force will be present to hear your responses, affirmations, questions and concerns.

The ELCA Task Force on Human Sexuality needs to hear from the whole church this fall in order to make necessary revisions in time for the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in August, 2009.  We as Lutherans here in South Carolina have a role to play in these deliberations.  Rostered leaders are encouraged to bring members of the congregation who may be interested in the hearing.

I look forward to sharing this time of faithful dialogue and conversation together.
