RESOLUTIONS
Day of Holy Conversation
Ten resolutions (click here for Resolutions page with links to each document) were submitted by the January 22, 2010, deadline for the Day of Holy Conversation scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2010, at Newberry College, Newberry. This pre-assembly gathering begins at 10:00 a.m. and will conclude at 4:00 p.m. The resolutions will give us the opportunity to deepen conversation with each other on where we are in regard to the actions of the 2009 Churchwide Assembly and explore legislative motions for our Synod Assembly in June. It is a time to listen to each other and to be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit. There will be no legislative action taken. As you read through the resolutions, please note that several of the resolutions have been linked together because of their similarities and will be discussed together.
PROCEDURES
1. The order in which the resolutions are presented has been established by the “Synod Council Resolutions and Memorials Committee” which has also identified a person to present each resolution along with a prayer.
2. One initial speaker has been identified to present the pro and one initial speaker to present the con of each resolution before general conversation from the floor. Both of these initial speakers will be given three minutes each to give thoughtful comments on the issues in that particular resolution.
3. After each initial pro speaker and each initial con speaker, three pro and con speakers, alternating and speaking for 90 seconds each and using red and green cards, will be recognized from the floor at the microphone before moving on to the next resolution.
4. The constitutionality of each resolution will not be the focus on this Day of Holy Conversation so that there will be time for discussion on the substance of the resolution. This is a non-legislative gathering. The secretary of the synod will make general comments about constitutional issues at the beginning of the afternoon session. No single resolution will be addressed, in particular, from the standpoint of its constitutionality.
5. A survey will be conducted at the end of the day to help us understand which of these resolutions will be the most helpful for living together faithfully and carrying out God’s Mission in South Carolina. The results of the survey will be sent to congregations for further conversation and prayer in preparation for the SC Synod Assembly.
6. The resolutions that we discuss on the Day of Holy Conversation do not automatically go to the Synod Assembly on June 4-5, 2010. In accord with constitutional provision S7.01.01.a., Constitution, Bylaws and Continuing Resolutions, South Carolina Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, resolutions to the Synod Assembly are to be sent to the synodical secretary at P. O. Box 43, Columbia, SC 29202 on or before May 20, 2010, which is 15 days prior to the formal opening of the assembly.
