AUGUST 1-3:
NATIONAL LMM CONVENTION AND GATHERING IN OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
|
"Coming of Age," the 2008 Lutheran Men's Gathering will take
place August 1-3, 2008 at the Omaha, NE Hilton and Qwest Center.
“Coming of Age”, the Lutheran Men’s Gathering theme, has a
two-fold meaning. One has to do with LMM’s emphasis on ministry
with young men and the opportunities afforded at this event for
men to build inter-generational relationships. The other has to
do with this ministry maturing and standing on its own: coming
of age.
Featured speakers will include former Nebraska coach and
congressman Tom Osborne; Coming of Age authors David Anderson
and Paul Hill; as well as Larry Clark, Ernie Hinojosa and
others. Gathering musicians will include Dakota Road and Peter
Mayer. Dakota Road has been a popular band at youth gatherings
and men’s events. A popular musician in his solo career, Peter
Mayer is also lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett’s band.
Geared to bring men of all ages into a deeper relationship
with God and assist younger and older men in building
inter-generational relationships, the event will not only
feature prominent speakers and musicians but will also provide
opportunities for men to serve and play. The 48,000-square-foot
interactive center will include building Habitat for Humanity
sheds, high-ropes courses and other games. DON'T MISS THIS!
Learn more about the 2008 "Coming of Age" Lutheran Men's
Gathering by going to

10:00am - 2:30pm Stavros Lecture Hall
"Living Together in the 21st Century: The Lutheran Vocation
in World Christianity" Lecturer: The Rev. Dr. Wanda Deifelt,
Luther College
Respondent - The Rev. Dr. Phillip Baker, Professor of
Missiology and Evangelism
The 2008 Hein-Fry Lectures focus on the theme of the Lutheran
Church’s relationship with other Christian communities
throughout the world. From her unique experiences, scholarship,
and perspectives, Dr. Deifelt will address what Lutherans and
other Christian communities around the world have to offer each
other. Engaging Luther's theology of the cross as a possible
Lutheran response to Christian fundamentalism in Latin America,
she will offer a challenge to civil passivity by drawing from
Luther's theology and the experiences of Latin American
Christians who reclaim the concept of 'cidadania' (citizenship)
to foster active participation in civil society. Dr. Baker is a
frequent keynote speaker on evangelism and the mission of the
church. He leads cross-cultural study trips to Africa and India
and has taught extensively there and in India where he was on
the faculty of Gurukul Lutheran Theological College and Research
Center in Chennai (Madras).
The annual Hein-Fry Lecture Series, the premier endowed
theological lectureship of the ELCA, identifies key theological
issues facing the church and offers lectures that stimulate
inquiry and discussion of those issues at the eight ELCA
seminaries and throughout the church.

LYRA, an a cappella singing group from Russia, will
be touring the nation this Spring. We are blessed to be
hosting them at Gethsemane Lutheran in Columbia (6904
Satchelford Road) on May 4 at 5:00 pm. LYRA is a
community of professional musicians most of whom are
students or graduates of the St. Petersburg Conservatory
and sing in churches and musical theaters throughout
that city. Though members of LYRA represent different
musical professions: choral conductors, opera singers,
instrumentalists, music teachers, it is their passion
for ensemble singing that unites them. We invite your
congregation to join us for this unique event.
